The much-loved Indian-inspired street food stalwarts and recent winners on TV’s Million Pound Menu opened their first permanent sit-down restaurant on Friday 24th May in Camden Market’s North Yard.
Following their huge success on Million Pound Menu, co-founders and partners in business and life, Alec Owen and Liz Selway are thrilled to launch Baba G’s in Camden, their most exciting venture to date and their first step outside the realm of street food. Baba G’s have been trading at London’s top street food markets for over a decade, starting their journey in 2008 when Alec met a holy man - or Baba - up a mountain in Northern India who suggested the name Baba G’s (‘G’ representing ‘sir’ in India).
Baba G’s has taken over a 50-seater restaurant unit right in the heart of Camden Market’s North Yard next to the iconic statue of Amy Winehouse, and is open seven days a week, from lunch through to dinner each day. The Market’s North Yard is currently undergoing change, set to become home to a brand-new, indoor selection of food and beverage operators.
The space is decked out with exposed brickwork, industrial-style steel framed tables and low-level industrial lighting. Bollywood-style graffiti adorns the walls, alongside an open butchery area where Baba G’s signature Bhangra burgers are made from scratch. The space, lit in Baba G’s signature pink neon hue, also features a large open kitchen with marble counter seating that offers guests the full food menu, alongside a shorter street food takeaway menu on offer to passer-bys through the window hatch, akin to the other traders in Camden Market.
Inspired by the overflowing spice cupboards at home during his childhood and the bustling Asian food markets of Birmingham where he grew up, head chef Alec’s dishes at Baba G’s have always focussed on big, boisterous and bold Indian flavours with a unique modern twist, and he is continuing to have fun experimenting with these flavours on the menu at Baba G’s Camden.
The all-new menu brings together Baba G’s favourite Indian-inspired classics from their past 10 years of street food trading, including the signature Pacho’s (poppadom nachos), Chicken Tikka nuggets and Bhangra burgers; as well as introducing a more refined menu of new and exciting small plates drawing from their time on Million Pound Menu and beyond, such as Raan Lamb and Achaar Croquettes and Spiralized Celeriac Bhajis.
The menu also caters for families, with a specially created ‘Little G’s’ menu for the kids. Drinks at Baba G’s include Indian-inspired milkshakes, each spiced with bold flavours such as cardamom and chai, alongside a signature cocktail menu focussing on Old Fashioneds and spiced rum.
Ahead of the Camden launch, Liz commented: “We started our journey with Camden Market as part of its international street food line up (located in the West Yard, overlooking Regent's Canal) and so when the opportunity arose to see our brand grow further, the Market seemed like the natural choice. We can't wait to showcase the full Baba G experience, mixing up our signature Bhangra burgers with inspired side shares and dishes for the whole family. We'll be in great company too, rubbing shoulders with the likes of The Cheese Bar, The Camden Grocer and rotisserie restaurant Kuku Riku."
Baba G’s have taken on board this permanent site venture independently of Million Pound Menu investors Atul Kochhar and Jamie Barber, who have continued to mentor them through the process. They look forward to working together with them on future projects.
