On 7 October, Hackney restaurant Koya Ko will celebrate its one year anniversary in east London with a series of giveaways for lucky diners who find a Japanese symbol painted on the underside of their bowl. An array of prizes will be up for grabs on the day, including four golden tickets entitling each winner to a grand prize of ‘free udon for a year’.

All diners have to do to be in with a chance is purchase any main meal – either a rice dish or a bowl of Koya’s signature handmade udon noodles – slurp their way to the bottom, then turn over their bowl to check for a winning Japanese symbol underneath. Diners with the lucky symbol will have the chance to pick a ‘birthday card’ at random from behind the till, each containing a prize ranging from free pints of Asahi beer to complimentary Happy Endings x Koya ice cream sandwiches. Four special birthday cards will contain the grand prize – a ‘golden ticket’ which entitles the winners to a free bowl of udon every month for the next year. All birthday prizes will be redeemable at the Broadway Market location at any time throughout the next 12 months.

Neighbourhood restaurant Koya Ko opened in 2021 from the team behind Koya, London’s most celebrated noodle connoisseur, as the more casual ‘little sister’ to its Soho and City locations. With no reservations and counter service-only, Ko offers a fun, informal twist on chef Shuko Oda’s authentic Japanese dishes, including udon and dashi dishes such as the KO! Meaty, alongside donburi, snacks and draught beer.

The Koya Ko first birthday giveaway will take place on Friday 7 October at 10 Broadway Market Mews, London, E8 4TS. Terms and conditions apply.
